Born in the future nation of Italy, then a part of the – Austro-Hungarian Empire, Kraus attended medical school in Vienna in the s, against his father's wishes, becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Through his subsequent practice he developed a philosophy of treatment at odds with traditional medicine of the time. This is a catalogue of early English books and manuscripts that were for sale by the book dealer Hans Peter Kraus (). Among the items in the catalogue is the first book printed in English, a leaf from a first edition of 'The Canterbury Tales' and the first English book on gardening.

The Austrian-born Hans Peter Kraus (–) was the leading rare-book dealer of the second half of the twentieth century; he continued his business in New York after the outbreak of World War II. This is a small, two-volume copy of the Gospels in Greek. The scribe wrote the text in a careful minuscule hand. The manuscript’s small size suggests that it was created for private devotional use rather than liturgical or communal use. Later commentary appears in a larger, less regular hand. The manuscript contains fourteen full-page illuminated canon tables.
